We would like to take a day trip by train or bus from Venice to one of the towns on the lake. Any suggestions for the best/prettiest/most interesting, most picturesque place to visit for the day. We have never been to this part of Italy before and already have a planned train trip to Verona from Venice but would really like to visit the lake. We plan to visit in 2 weeks time. Help would be really appreciated.

The train stops at Peschiera and Desenzano, both of which are nice towns at either corner of the south of the lake. However I would suggest taking a bus or ferry to Garda, Lazise or Salo would be well worth while. These a prettier towns with more history, more dramatic settings and lot of charm!
