Which part of Lake Garda to visit first?

My partner and I are thinking about a holiday at Lake Garda, we have not been before, would like a location which is both relaxing and with plenty of places to visit.

I would suggest staying in Desenzano sul Garda. It's one of the more lively towns. It's the most accessible by car,bus, boat and train. By train you can easily get to Verona (opera),Venezia or Milan for the day.
Once you're at Desenzano go to several of the lake towns by local bus or boat/ferry. I especially like Salo, Maderno, Limone, Riva, Malcesine, Bardolino, Lasize, Sirmione....oh well, I love them all!
In Sopra Fasano there is a great restaurant with magificent views and terrific peasant food.
Lots of good eats all around the lake. Take the time to enjoy a 3 hour lunch and often.
